Red Cloud Lakota Keyboard for ChromeOS
Red Cloud Lakota Keyboard is a specialized input method editor (IME) designed for typing Lakota characters on ChromeOS. This free add-on allows users to access unique characters used in the Lakota language, adhering to the orthographic guidelines established by Red Cloud Indian School. It enhances the typing experience for speakers and learners of Lakota by integrating seamlessly with the standard English keyboard layout.
The keyboard utilizes a "dead-key" mechanism, where pressing the ^ key (Shift+6) enables users to type special characters. For instance, pressing Shift+6 followed by 's' generates the character š, while Shift+6 followed by 'n' produces ŋ. This functionality ensures that users can easily incorporate Lakota characters into their text without sacrificing the usability of the English keyboard.
